Benetas homes participate in world-first study testing impact of ultraviolet light on COVID-19

Six Benetas aged care homes will take part in a world-first study, run by the Victorian Department of Health, to see if invisible ultraviolet light can decrease the impact of COVID-19 and flu in aged care settings.

The 12-month Elucidar study, developed in direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic, will start in early July with more than 60 aged care homes participating across Melbourne and Geelong.

Benetas homes including The Views at Heidelberg, Clarinda on the Park, Colton Close (Glenroy), St George’s (Altona), Corowa Court (Mornington) and St Paul’s (Frankston), will participate.

The lights will only be installed in half of the homes with the other sites making up the control group.

The invisible germicidal ultraviolet light is believed to neutralise airborne viruses in the room and is safe for residents, employees and visitors.

Throughout the 12 months, information on the number of respiratory infections in all facilities will be collected. This may include COVID-19, flu and similar viruses.

Once the study is completed and the expected conclusions found, Benetas can decide to keep the lights in the three Intervention group homes and potentially roll them out at other sites.

Benetas CEO Sandra Hills OAM said, if successful, the study would help reduce the impact of colds and other viruses, including COVID-19, in aged care homes.

“Aged care residents are typically more vulnerable to these illnesses, particularly in age care settings,” Ms Hills said. “If something as simple as ultraviolet lights can reduce the impact and incidence, then it’s an important step for the aged care sector.”

Minister for Ageing Ingrid Stitt said the study could help deliver more innovative and effective methods of keeping residents, staff and visitors free from illness.

“This trial is about new ways of reducing illness in our aged care facilities – reducing infections and improving the pressure placed on aged care and hospital workforces during peak COVID-19 and flu season,” Ms Stitt said.

The Burnet Institute is the research partner supporting the Department in this study, and leads a team of scientists, clinicians and clinical trial experts.

For more information on the study go to https://www.health.vic.gov.au/germicidal-ultraviolet-light-combatting-airborne-virus-transmission/elucidar-study.

Benetas and Andromeda Robotics trial AI robot at Altona aged care home

Benetas has partnered with Andromeda Robotics to trial the use of an AI-powered robot to engage residents at our residential homes.

As part of the aged care provider’s extensive lifestyle program, the humanoid companion robot, known as Abi, will interact with residents, spending 3 months at different residential homes.

Abi uses GPT4 artificial intelligence models to recognise residents, answer questions and customise conversations based on previous interactions.

This level of personalisation creates a unique and meaningful experience for residents during lifestyle activities and one-to-one interactions, making them feel more engaged.

Abi also speaks 90 languages, helping her interact with residents who speak English as a second or even third language.

Benetas’ Insights team will carry out research during the trial to measure Abi’s impact in our homes, analysing resident experience and quality of life both pre and post implementation, as well as reflections from staff.

Benetas General Manager Customer, Insights and Marketing Elyssia Clark said it was crucial that the aged care sector embraced and experimented with new technology to help support residents.

Ms Clark also thanked the Australian-based Andromeda Robotics for their support during the trial.

“This is an important and exciting step to see how we can improve the lives of our residents, leveraging artificial intelligence and robotics to create unique social interactions,” Ms Clark said.

“We look forward to seeing how Abi relates to residents and the results from the trial.”

Andromeda Robotics Co-Founder Grace Brown said Abi was designed to offer a unique blend of friendship and support to aged care residents.

“With her inquisitive and child-like personality, Abi is programmed to engage interactively and empathetically with residents, fostering both emotional and social wellbeing,” Ms Brown said.

“She is more than just a piece of technology, Abi is a friend who brings joy and companionship to everyday life.”

Macedon Ranges Health podiatrists using cutting-edge diagnostic technology on your feet

Macedon Ranges Health podiatry patients are benefitting from state-of-the-art Systoe technology, which quickly and accurately diagnoses the health of their feet.

The technology was introduced at the Gisborne health service in late 2023, allowing podiatrists to measure blood circulation and diagnose the health of a foot within minutes.

The speed and accuracy of the technology ensures patients with poor circulation receive appropriate treatment before the threat of ulcers, gangrene and, in some cases, amputation becomes a real possibility.

Systoe is superior to existing podiatry diagnostic technologies, such as Doppler Ultrasound, particularly in relation to patients with diabetes, many of whom suffer artery calcification, which can hinder accurate diagnosis.

The automated technology, which attaches to a patient via a cuff on the big toe, is already in use in some Australian hospitals, however it is yet to be introduced widely in a clinical setting.

The Gisborne health service purchased the technology after successfully applying for a Victorian Government Health and Community Care Program grant in 2023.

Benetas General Manager Community Health and Care Helen Kemp said Macedon Ranges Health would always work to implement the newest technologies to improve the care provided to patients.

“Systoe allows us to assess podiatry patients quickly, ensuring they get the best possible treatment as quickly as possible,” Ms Kemp said.

“The automated nature of Systoe reduces the chance of error while accounting for anomalies, particularly with patients suffering from diabetes.”

Macedon Ranges Health is a community based not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the provision of health, community, welfare and aged care services to the communities of Macedon Ranges Shire and surrounding districts.

Services provided include dietetics and nutrition, physiotherapy services, podiatry and foot care and psychology and counselling.

Benetas plays a leadership role in understanding the needs of older Australians

Digital habits of older Australians

81% say tech is important in helping them keep in touch with family and friends

80% are concerned about the security of their personal information when using online services

Our research has confirmed that technology use among senior Australians is widespread and a key to them keeping connected, despite what popular culture would have us believe. However, 80% of Australians aged 65+ are concerned about the security of their personal information when using online services and 17% reported that they have been the victim of an online, email or text message scam where they lost money.

The Benetas Digital Inclusion & Cyber Safety Among Australian Seniors Research Study surveyed just over 1,000 Australians aged 65+ via an online panel* to learn about their use of technology, explore cyber safety concerns and identify opportunities to lift confidence and capability when using technology.

The research found that eight in ten older Australians describe technology as very (41%) or somewhat (40%) important in helping them keep in touch with family and friends. Using videos calls (48%) to make or receive calls has overtaken use of landlines (45%), but mobile phones are well in front at 94%. Emails (98%) and texts (93%) are used by virtually everyone as well.

Meanwhile, 76% of women and 62% of men are on social media, with one in two older Australians using it every day. More generally, 85% enjoy using the internet, but 71% are concerned about online privacy and keeping personal information safe, and only 10% are very confident in their ability to stay safe online. In fact, 34% of older Australians had never booked a holiday or restaurant online, and 19% had never shopped online.

Elyssia Clark, General Manager of Customer, Insights and Marketing at Benetas said the research confirms that technology is very much part of older Australians’ lives and it's extremely positive that more than half (55%) of older Australians say they would like to improve their knowledge further so they can do more things online.

"There are flow on benefits for keeping connected with families and friends, but technology use has also resulted in 80% of older Australians being concerned about the security of their personal information when they are online.

"In fact, we found privacy and security concerns are the most common limitation to using technology, well above physical, financial, or language related limitations. Ms Clark said.

Benetas' research also investigated online security behaviours and gaps. It confirmed that older Australians are doing many things right in this regard, such as using anti-virus software (78%), ignoring unsolicited messages or emails (82%) and using strong passwords (75%).

However, only 39% change their passwords regularly and just 10% of people surveyed had received any cyber safety training.

This is despite strong interest in learning more about avoiding online scams (58%), how to recognise phishing emails or texts (49%), safe online banking practices (45%) and password security (40%).

Ms Clark said: "Benetas is proud to play a leadership role in understanding the needs of older Australians and sharing insights and evidence-based recommendations that address and support community needs.

"We are using the insights and findings from our research to develop a cyber safety training program that caters to the needs of older Australians and helps keep them and their families safe online."

Benetas to provide affordable housing for Bendigo seniors

Benetas will soon begin refurbishing ageing independent living units located within the St Laurence Court Retirement Village in California Gully.

The existing units, built around 1960, will be converted into 38 two-bedroom units to be used as affordable housing for people aged 55 and older. Residents will also have access to communal facilities within the site.

The refurbishment will include a complete internal and external makeover with new walls, ceilings, flooring, a new kitchen, bathroom, laundry and wardrobes.

The units will also focus on energy efficiency and include appliances that not only improve environmental sustainability but also reduce utility costs.

Benetas will manage the selection of residents who will participate in an interview before being approved. Older single women – the fastest growing cohort of homeless Australians – will be prioritised during this process with the first residents expected to move in by the end of 2024.

Benetas CEO Sandra Hills OAM said the new retirement community would meet the rising demand for affordable housing across Victoria, particularly in regional areas.

Ms Hills said seniors without the means to enter the housing and rental markets would be the community’s target demographic.

“Benetas is extremely proud of this refurbishment and what it will do to address housing shortages for older people in and around Bendigo,” Ms Hills said.

“We will work with the local community during the refurbishment and selection process before residents begin moving into the units later this year.”

The refurbished units will include new power and lighting, reverse cycle heating and cooling and a new environmental heat pump hot water system.

Externally, they will feature new double glazed windows, doors, replacement of existing timber cladding and painted timber work. A private secure rear yard will also be provided.

The adjoining Benetas Eaglehawk residential aged care home will be subject to minor impacts during the refurbishment works, which will be planned and coordinated to minimise disruption.

Benetas also operates retirement villages in Roxburgh Park (Bridgewater Lake), Mooroolbark (St John’s Rise) and Traralgon (Dalkeith Heights).

Kindness counts at Colton Close residential home

In our residential aged care homes, our team members take the time to understand our residents and tailor care to each person.

Residents are encouraged to pursue their interests through a range of lifestyle programs, and our homes are open to family and friends, who are always welcome to visit.

“When I first visited Colton Close, I was immediately struck by the friendliness and warmth of the staff and the management team,” says Jill Calleja, whose mum, Mavis, has been a resident since May 2023.

“Mum was living at another retirement village, and we weren’t happy with aspects of it, and a friend whose mother lives at Colton Close recommended it to us.”

Mavis spent a few weeks at Colton Close under respite arrangements, so she and Jill could get a feel for the rooms, meals, staff, ambience and level of care. They both loved it, and Mavis moved in permanently not long after.

“Mum has a lovely big room which has been recently renovated and one of the walls is painted a gorgeous shade of green. There’s a little lounge room attached to her room where she can watch TV and sit either by herself or with other people,” said Jill.

“She feels very much at home here. When I arrive to see her, she’s often doing one activity or another, whether it’s music or dancing, keeping her mind and body active,” Jill said.

“What’s really struck me, though, is the level of genuine care from the staff here,” said Jill.

“They are all so friendly and kind, to mum and to me as well. Nothing is a problem and when I take mum out she always gets lovely compliments from them on how she looks and what she’s wearing. It’s everyone, from whoever is in charge on the floor that day, to the nurses, carers, other team members and the reception team. It’s so genuine and kind and makes us both feel so good.”

Sebastian Torero, who works as part of our CHC team as an In Home Service Assistant, sums it up when he says, “You want to know that someone is taking good care of your parents when you can’t, and that someone really cares about them – at the end of the day, I think that’s very important.”

Sebastian joined our CHC team in May 2023 and was looking for flexibility and a sense of purpose in his work. “I’m really passionate about helping others and making strong connections with clients,” says Sebastian. “What I love about my job is listening and showing that I care about my clients’ wellbeing. At the same time, I have also grown as a person from the interactions I’ve had with them.”

Samantha Reeves, Senior In Home Service Assistant (and Sebastian’s manager), understands it can be challenging to attract people to work in the aged care sector in a competitive environment for talent. “We create a welcoming environment for team members and make sure they feel supported and enjoy their work. We can offer team members flexibility with shift hours and the opportunity to make a positive difference to an older person’s life. Making meaningful connections and bringing a little bit of joy to someone every day at work – who wouldn’t want that?”

Benetas announces second stage of homes at Mooroolbark retirement village

Benetas has announced plans to build 36 new retirement living homes as part of the second stage of construction at St John’s Rise Retirement Village in Mooroolbark.

People aged 55 and older can begin expressing interest in the homes, which are expected to be completed in 2025. In July 2022, residents began moving into the 46-home first stage of the community, which is named after the Anglican parish that established Benetas services in the area more than six decades ago.

The completed village will feature 131 retirement living homes across four stages located close to a range of local amenities, including the centre of Mooroolbark.

The second stage works will include a community centre, indoor pool, fitness centre, cinema and a multi-purpose exercise room for residents. It will also feature consulting rooms, hairdressing salon, lounge, dining and bar areas, library, craft and billiard room.

Residents already have access to a clubhouse, 24-hour emergency call system, maintenance and repair services and annual testing and changing of batteries in their smoke detectors.

Benetas CEO Sandra Hills OAM said the second stage of the, which had already received promising interest, offered a supportive, inclusive environment in Melbourne’s leafy outer east.

“The demand for residential living will only rise over the next couple of decades, so we’re ensuring there are plenty of attractive and convenient options in the region,” Ms Hills said.

“We’ve received overwhelmingly positive feedback from our first St John’s Rise residents with the community set to grow over the next few years.”

Benetas services extend from retirement living through to home care services, respite care and 12 residential aged care homes.

St John’s Rise resident Marisa, whose daughter tragically passed away during 2023, said it was the relationships formed at the retirement village that helped her get through this difficult time.

“Moving into St John’s Rise was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. When I lost my daughter I would not have coped without my neighbours. It’s like I have known them all my life,” Marisa said.

Benetas operates four retirement communities including St John’s Rise, Bridgewater Lake in Roxburgh Park, Dalkeith Heights in Traralgon and, at the end of this year, St Laurence Court in Eaglehawk, Bendigo.

Benetas will run an Open Day at St John’s Rise on Sunday, 25 February between 10am and 12pm.

5 minutes with our Dementia Specialist

Meet Margaret Alexander, our dedicated Dementia Specialist with extensive experience in nursing and aged care.

Marg is fuelled by a passion for working with the elderly, especially those living with dementia and since joining Benetas in 2020, she has spearheaded several initiatives focusing on the wellbeing of residents living with dementia.

Notably, she has led the launch of the Best Life Model of Care program, a 17-week mentoring initiative aimed at upskilling employees in dementia care.

The program focuses on a person’s life – social, spiritual, family, work, and environment – to make meaningful connections regardless of a person’s cognitive ability, the level of care they receive or their place of residence.

“It is important to have a person-centred approach and help our residents and clients find joy, purpose and meaning in their lives,” says Marg.

Marg has continuously supported team members to develop and grow their knowledge and improve the way they care for customers.

“Working in a leadership role, I enjoy the opportunity to develop and mentor our team members to enable them to find the joy in caring," she says.

Marg says she finds working with older people rewarding and their resilience and outlook on life inspiring.

“I love their humour, stories and their wisdom. My career and passion for caring for older people is my way of giving back and finding joy in my own life.”

This week is Dementia Action Week, a national campaign that raises awareness and challenges common misconceptions about dementia.

This Dementia Action Week, Marg has a message for all carers:

"Understanding and knowing the person we care for is key to providing quality care. Our aim is enablement, by focusing on what our residents and clients can do rather than what they can’t.”

Launch of our Long Live Home campaign

Benetas campaign addresses research highlighting seniors’ reluctance to seek home care sooner.

The majority of older Victorians prefer to maintain their independence by staying in the family home as long as possible, according to the latest Benetas research*.

Unfortunately, the same research suggests many of these same seniors are reluctant to seek out and receive home care.

More than 90 percent of Benetas clients said receiving services at home allowed them to continue living their life in familiar surroundings – where children were raised, milestones were marked and special occasions were celebrated.

The research also found that 46 per cent of those who rejected home care services, did so because they were concerned about losing independence and 34 per cent said they were uncomfortable having strangers in their home.

Benetas’ Long Live Home media campaign, which launched this week, was developed by creative agency Silver Lining to break down the misconception that home care was an interruption to their daily routine.

The campaign highlights how people aged 65 and older can receive support at home and continue doing what they love.

The campaign features senior Jeanne and her beloved chair. In the background Benetas home care workers carry out tasks, in fast forward, around the home, allowing Jeanne to get on with what she enjoys doing.

Benetas General Manager Community Health and Care Helen Kemp said the campaign perfectly illustrated how receiving home care in no way impeded the way older people went about their lives.

Ms Kemp said home care workers adapted and worked to a person’s preferences, meeting the needs that were unique to them.

“The research clearly highlights that staying at home means a lot to older Victorians, it’s our job to do whatever we can to support them,” Ms Kemp said.

Silver Lining Founder Jonny Clow said Jeanne’s chair provided the vantage point to explore Jeanne’s interactions, using the music and visual effects to highlight the invisible support provided by home care workers.

“Home is where the heart is and we would all like to stay there for as long as we can,” Mr Clow said. “The memories a home holds are defined by not only the people within it but also the things they accumulate over the years.”

To view the campaign, click here.

* Research includes a mix of internal Benetas customer research and market statistics conducted from The Catalyst Report – Home Care insights, both in 2023.

Benetas welcomes bipartisan agreement on Aged Care Act

Media Statement: Benetas welcomes bipartisan agreement on Aged Care Act

Statement attributable to Benetas CEO Sandra Hills OAM:

Benetas has welcomed the bipartisan agreement between the Albanese Government and the Opposition that will see the introduction of the new Aged Care Act into Parliament.

As a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, the new Aged Care Act places the sector on a path towards desperately needed reform.

We commend the Federal Government and Opposition for showing their commitment to the aged care industry by reaching agreement on a range reforms that will unlock crucial funding for the sector.

As our sector grapples with increased demand for services, against a backdrop of an ageing population with more complex health needs than ever before, the agreement provides hope for aged care providers and older Australians.

These reforms not only provide crucial and sustainable financial security but also confidence for the sector to invest in new programs and care models that have the ability to deliver the quality outcomes that older Australians expect and deserve.

Spectacular Events - a month long celebration of our residents

During October, we hosted the Benetas Spectacular, a vibrant month-long event across our care homes to celebrate our residents.

Each of our care homes created a uniquely themed day, as residents embraced the events and immersed themselves in the festivities, creating memorable moments.

Themes included Musical Oklahoma, Circus, Woodstock, Day at the Races, Arabian Nights, Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, Regal and Roaring 20s.

Staff from across the organisation got involved attending the day dresssed in theme, and spending time with the residents. Thank you to the employees who attended - whether it was assisting with activities, helping capture the magic of each event, or supporting the teams in any way, your involvement was greatly appreciated.

The atmosphere across our homes was filled with joy, laughter and happiness, and it was heart-warming to see our residents engage in this wonderful celebration.

Benetas has announced the appointment of its new Chair Julia Pryor.

Intergenerational connections at Benetas

Benetas intergenerational connections prove effective for seniors and preschoolers.

The social connection between seniors and children has proven to be overwhelmingly beneficial for both demographics. Numerous studies, including those carried out by Stanford University and the American Association of Retired Persons, have highlighted how and why these interactions are beneficial.

Not to mention the ABC series Old People’s Home For Four Year Olds, which has been a revelation, a truly heart-warming display.

We at Benetas have seen this opportunity and connected with a Traralgon preschool to deliver these connections at our nearby aged care home Dalkeith Gardens.

Since November 2023, children from Sara Court Preschool have visited the aged care home, sharing a range of activities, including colouring, painting, active games, gardening, blocks, books, craft and dancing.

The first thing you notice during the 90-minute sessions is the instant joy and enthusiasm generated when both groups meet.

The most treasured moments occur when the children and residents sing and dance to songs together, prompting happiness and laughter while bringing a sense of calm and belonging to the environment.

The preschoolers listen intently to resident life stories with discussion of a time before television and iPads, while the seniors catch up on the latest children’s popular culture icons.

For the children, the unique and sincere responses are startling. All barriers are broken down and the children feel comfortable asking questions as they get to know a different century. The residents listen intently the other way, getting better acquainted with new slang they can use after the children have left.

More deeply, the residents’ newfound enthusiasm stays with them long after the children have left for the day. It’s more than noticeable, it’s almost tangible.

The connections also reinforce that old adage that you’re never too old to learn new things with many residents gaining an understanding of topics and subjects they may have never considered.

For the children, the program provides a little wisdom and an opportunity to thrive, grow and see the world from a different perspective.

Their confidence grows, supporting the development of social skills and emotional maturity. Shy children have become more confident as they engage and feel comfortable interacting and expressing themselves.

Benetas has also partnered with preschools located near some of their other homes, spreading the benefits witnessed at Dalkeith Gardens.

The interactions form a crucial part of our lifestyle program, which focus on encouraging engagement, activity and fun for residents.

We cannot recommend the initiative enough to engage residents and preschools gain a new perspective and enthusiasm about the world they live in and how other generations see it.

Creating regional intergenerational connections

Intergenerational connections benefiting Traralgon aged care residents and preschoolers.

Dalkeith Gardens residential aged care home has formed a special partnership with a Traralgon preschool, building intergenerational relationships and connections.

Three and four-year-olds from Sara Court Preschool have been visiting residents at the Benetas aged care home on an almost weekly basis since November 2023.

The 90-minute sessions bring together roughly 20 residents and 20 children to share a range of activities, including colouring, painting, active games, gardening, blocks, books, craft and dancing.

The program provides residents with enthusiasm to be active and engaged, participating in activities and discussing things they may not have thought about for decades.

For the children, the program provides a little wisdom and an opportunity to thrive, grow and see things from a different perspective.

Overall, the interactions have enhanced wellbeing, fostering emotional comfort for both generations through meaningful connections and relationships.

A number of studies, including those carried out by Stanford University and the American Association of Retired Persons, have highlighted the benefits of intergenerational connections.

Benetas CEO Sandra Hills OAM said both residents and children had benefitted from the program, living and seeing things from another generation’s perspective.

She said some of the most treasured moments were experienced when the children and residents sang and danced to songs together, prompting happiness and laughter while bringing a sense of calm and belonging.

“We know how important intergenerational connections are to both children and seniors,” Ms Hills said. “At Benetas, we have rolled out similar programs at some of our other residential aged care homes to support our residents to remain connected to their communities.”

Latrobe City Council manages Sara Court Preschool. Latrobe City Council CEO Steven Piasente said he had heard from council’s early childhood educators about how the program has helped typically shy children become more confident, by interacting and expressing themselves to the aged care residents rather than their peers.

“The program has helped children’s confidence grow, it has supported development of their social skills, and has promoted their emotional growth through cross-generational engagement,” Mr Piasente said.

“This is a truly special concept that enriches all those involved, and shows that the importance of play is ageless.”

5 minutes with the Retirement Living Coordinator

5 Minutes with Uvonne Rigbye

We recently caught up with Uvonne Rigbye, Retirement Living Coordinator at St Laurence Court, to learn more about her role.

Q: Tell us about your career and your role at St Laurence Court.

A: Prior to joining Benetas, I worked in a variety of roles, including customer service and administrative work in a range of industries including supermarkets, wholesale fruit and vegetables, and the freight train business. Over four years ago, I joined Benetas as the Support Services Officer in the Rural Northwest team. I then became a Workforce Coordinator before transitioning to my current role.

For the past six months, I have been the Retirement Living Coordinator at St Laurence Court Community. My responsibilities include: organising community activities, addressing complaints, ensuring common areas meet safety standards, submitting maintenance requests, assisting residents with IT issues, and explaining the Retirement Living Act and contracts to new residents.

Q: What do you like about your role?

A: I enjoy making a difference in the lives of the residents of the St Laurence Court community. The women who have moved into the community previously faced financial difficulties in the private rental sector. Now, they have the security of knowing they have a home for as long as they want. I also love hearing the residents' stories from when they were younger.

Q: What kind of reaction have you received from the residents since they moved into the refurbished units?

A: The residents have consistently expressed their appreciation that Benetas has supported the Bendigo community. They have mentioned that the feeling of security and being in a community with like-minded people is something they have greatly missed. The most common comment is: “Our homes are beautiful!”

Find out more about Benetas below, inclduding signing up for Job Alerts, or expressing an interest in upcomming vacancies,

Benetas celebrates International Nurses Day 2025

Celebrating International Nurses Day 2025

Today, we celebrate International Nurses Day, which is observed every year on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Our Nurses deliver specialised, high quality nursing care to older Victorians in our residential homes and in client homes in our local communities, and I would like to recognise the dedication, compassion and the invaluable contributions of our nurses in caring for our residents, clients, and customers.

This year’s theme, Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies, highlights the importance of supporting the health and well-being of nurses.

At Benetas, we are committed to empowering our aspiring and current nursing professionals through various clinical and non-clinical development programs such as our Clinical forums, Transition to Practice, Dementia education, Driving Strategy and Scholarship programs. These opportunities foster personal and professional growth in a nurturing and safe environment, enhancing the overall quality of care for our team and customers.

This International Nurses Day, we spoke with a few team members from our organisation who have shared their passion for nursing, what this day means to them and a message for their fellow nurses.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate International Nurses Day 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting and investing in our nursing workforce. By empowering our nurses, we not only enhance the quality of care provided to our clients but also contribute to the strength and resilience of our healthcare system and economy.

To all our nurses at Benetas and around the world: thank you for your unwavering dedication and compassion. Your work is the cornerstone of our communities' health and well-being.

Want to join our Benetas nurses team? Check out current job opportunities below or express your interest in future opportunities.

Nursing opportunities at Benetas

Voices from the Frontline

In celebration of International Nurses Day, we spoke with some of our dedicated team members who shared their passion for nursing and reflections on this special day:

Melvin Guzha – Residential Manager, Colton Close

“International Nurses Day serves as a vital reminder to recognize the challenges faced by nurses and emphasize the importance of supporting and investing in the nursing profession. It’s essential that we acknowledge that self-care is not a luxury; it is a necessity,” says Melvin.

“On this day, I encourage all fellow nurses to dedicate time to care for themselves. Pause, recharge and remind yourself that you deserve care just as much as those you look after. Let’s nurture our own well-being so we can continue to provide compassionate, high-quality care to others."

Anna Nesmelova – Regional Operations Team Leader, Community Health and Care – South

"Working in Community Health and Care, my nursing background has helped me understand the physical and emotional needs of our clients and how we can best assist them. International Nurses Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the sacrifices and significant contributions that nurses make, and their resilience in the face of adversity," says Anna.

"To all the nurses out there: you are the heart of healthcare, and the impact you have on your patients' lives is immeasurable. Thank you for your expertise and empathy. Stay strong, take care of yourselves and remember how much you matter."

Nuray Sen – Registered Nurse, Colton Close

"My motivation to pursue nursing was to advocate for individuals, especially older people. Knowing that my work impacts someone’s well-being is deeply rewarding," says Nuray.

"Thank you to all my fellow nurses for your dedication and compassion. The personal connections I build with residents and their life stories are truly fulfilling. Nursing is dynamic, and there’s always something new to learn and new ways to grow."
